Course description

Åbo Akademi University is arranging an advanced course in Pigment Coating Technology on February 6-10, 2012 at Turku/Åbo, Finland. In addition to doctorate level university students, the course is designed for industry professionals who are engaged in paper coating & printing, and who wish to improve their understanding of pigment coating chemistry and technology. Besides the coating technologies, the course will focus on the chemistry and interactions of pigment coating components, and their effect on flow behaviour of coating suspensions and the final coated layer structure. Detailed lectures will also be given on the characterization of physical, chemical and functional properties of coatings, including the printability of coated paper. Those unfamiliar with pigment coating, or wanting to refresh the basics are encouraged to attend the pre-course refresher lecture Pigment Coating 101 - Introduction to Pigment Coating of Paper. The course spans five days and is an intensive learning experience presented by internationally renowned specialists in the field.

The course is part the doctoral level education offered by both PaPSaT - International Doctoral Programme in Bioproducts Technology and FPIRC - The Forest Products Industry Research College. For students wishing to obtain ECTS study credits, written examinations will be arranged after the course at times and places that will be decided during the course. The course entitles to 8 ECTS credits after passed examination. Additional 2 ECTS can be obtained by presenting a seminar during the course. For details, please contact the course coordinator.
