Process Systems Engineering is one of the major subjects within the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Process Engineering degree program of the Faculty of Technology. PSE at Åbo Akademi University is primarily focused on chemical engineering processes, with the aim to analyze, understand and develop methods for solving design and operation problems. This includes methods for the synthesis, analysis, optimization, evaluation, design, control and operation of industrial processes. In order to accomplish this, novel representations of the underlying chemical and physical phenomena, and computationally efficient formulations and solution methods are developed.

The ability to master increasingly complex entities and systems plays a central role in technological development. This endeavour is especially accenuated in process systems engineering where in addition to applied studies, modeling from first principles, optimization, control and systems theory are important ingredients.

Laboratories involved in the PSE education at ÅAU, are Heat Engineering, Industrial Chemistry & Reaction Engineering, Process Control and Process Design & Systems Engineering. These laboratories form the kernel of the Process Systems Engineering expertise of the Faculty of Technology.
