Course Description
Åbo Akademi University is arranging a course in Advanced Printing Technology on March 4-7, 2014 at Åbo/Turku, Finland. In addition to MSc and doctorate level university students, the course is designed for industry professionals who are engaged in paper coating & printing and who seek a deeper understanding of Printing Technology, or for those wanting to familiarize themselves with novel applications of using printing as a fabrication technology for new products.
The course spans four days and will feature industry experts covering both established printing technologies; offset, rotogravure, flexography and digital printing, and novel technologies including Landa Nanography and printed electronics on paper. In addition, new applications such as 3D-printing and printing of non-paper materials will be covered. An overview of economics of print media and media trends is reviewed as well as pre-press processing, image reproduction, and print quality assessment. Lectures will be given on printing materials, inks, fountain solutions, and substrates as well as runnability issues. Practical sessions explore examples of different printed materials and focus on the analysis of printing defects and ways to assess these problems. A visit to a print house is included.
The course is also suitable for those not having previous knowledge on printing technology. An introduction to the principles of different printing processes is given at the start of the course.
The course is appropriate for advanced level MSc students and doctorate students. Written examinations and/or assigments for students will be arranged after the course at times and places that will be decided during the course. The course language is English.

Dr. Jan Erik Nordström (Stora Enso), Dr Johannas Boppel (KBA), Dr Gustavo Gil Barros (TetraPak), Mr Jouni Marttila (M-real), Prof. Jouko Peltonen (Åbo Akademi) and Adj. prof. Dr Janet Preston (Imerys). Students will also have the opportunity to present their research in a student seminar. A full program will follow in the autumn.
