These pages contain practical details
about
life in the English Department.
REGISTERING AT THE DEPARTMENT You must register yourself as a student of the English Department at the very beginning of your first year of studies. You will get a form at the introductory lecture at the beginning of the term (if you cannot attend that, pick up a form from the Department Secretary, fill it in and return it to him). Please remember to inform us of any changes to the data on this sheet (e.g., if your address or phone number changes, or if you change your main or minor subject[s]). KEYS TO ARKENDuring your studies you will
need a key to open certain doors in Arken. You can get the key by
paying a deposit of 35 euros to the cashier's office in the
administrative building (Domkyrkotorget 3); keep the receipt, because
you can get 25 euros back when you return the key.
The Department has reserved one
of the rooms in the corridor for students. Unfortunately there have
been delays in getting furniture to the room, but we are still hoping
for the best. GETTING AN EMAIL ACCOUNTAs a student of Åbo
Akademi, you will get a user account
which entitled you to use all common computer resources at the
university. New students will get their usernames and passwords during
the introductory week at the beginning of their studies. You can
find more information on the Computing Centre's pages.
E-MAIL LIST OF STUDENTS AT THE DEPARTMENTThe Department Assistant has an
e-mail list of all students at the department.
This list is used to send you departmental information (e.g., about
guest
lectures, jobs, etc). If you wish to be on this list, please give your
e-mail address to the Assistant. If you do not wish to be on the list,
please make sure you read the notice boards carefully and on a regular
basis.
NOTICE BOARDSThere are several notice boards
in the Department's corridor. Please make it a habit to read these
notice boards regularly.
COMPUTERS IN THE DEPARTMENTThe Department has a small
computer 'bay' in the corridor. Access to
these computers is restricted to students of English. Please report any
problems with the computers or the printer in the
Department's Computer Room to the Secretary or the Assistant.
COURSE BOOKSSome book (or copies of
articles) are placed on the Course
Books shelves in the Humanities library or in the Department's computer
bay. These
are materials that are used during courses at the Department. You can
sit down
at an available reading place and read the relevant sections, but you
are under
no circumstances allowed to remove from the library any of the material
placed on a Course Books shelf!!!
REGISTERING YOUR ESSAYSWhen your
teacher has marked your essay, you must go and pick it up either from
the teacher (or the secretary). This
is very important! Teachers comment on the essays and mark/correct
errors and you can learn from their feedback. You will not receive
any credits until you have picked up all your
essays for the course in question.
REGISTERING FOR AN EXAMFinal exams of all modules take place on general exam days. When you to take part in an
exam at a general exam date (see Undervisningsprogrammet
or the notice boards for the dates), you must register for the exam at
least eight
days before
the exam date. To register, pick up an exam envelope
from the Faculty Office, complete the form, and put it in the mailbox
in the Faculty Office corridor. If you fail to register for an exam in
time, you must wait for the next exam date.
You can only register for one and the same exam three times during the
academic year. If you fail to turn up for an exam you have registered
for,
that reduces the number of times you can still register for it by
one. Exams for individual courses may take place at other times: those
course exams are always announced separately and you do not need to
register for them.
DEADLINESYou must hand in written
assignments by the relevant deadline.
Completing
assignments is a condition for passing courses at the English
Department.
Late completion can negatively affect the grade for the course and may
even result in a fail. If - for some good
reason - you are unable to meet an agreed deadline, negotiate the new
'mercy'
deadline with the teacher in good time. Assignments for courses will
not be accepted
after the deadline or mercy deadline set by the teachers. Depending
upon
the amount of other work and assignments required for the course,
students
who are late meeting a deadline will either receive a low pass mark or
be failed for the entire course.
The English Department has two teacher tutors, the Assistant (1st-, 2nd-year students, or new degree BA students) and Brita Wårvik (3rd- and 4th-year students). Your teacher tutor will help you design your study schedule for your 4-5 years at the University. Please check your emails and the notice board for information from your teacher tutor. You can also turn to the Department Assistant for help with issues concerning your studies at the English Department. Please refer to the paper version of this information pack or click here. |
