Day 2: Saturday 27 August 2011

Archipelago Centre Korpoström
& Cruise in the Archipelago

Contemporary Art Archipelago (CAA)

Tour of the CAA exhibition and presentation of art works and research processes by CAA artists: e.g. Alfredo Jaar (Chile/USA), Raqs Media Collective (India), Gediminas & Nomeda Urbonas (Lithuania)

Site-specificity is reconsidered in terms of the form and content of the CAA exhibition: How can contemporary art practices open the local for re-inscriptions that reflect the inbuilt complex dynamics and far-reaching trajectories?

While there is an enormous and growing investment in the local, CAA inhabits Turku Archipelago as a site of open horizons that deem it resonant with global concerns – of historical centrality in the midst of global flows, of diminishing distances via virtual connections, of desires for an alternative, and of the current urgency of depopulation on the one hand and of ecological disaster on the other.
