Otakt is a society for traditional dancing and folk music at Åbo Akademi University in Turku, Finland. It is the association for those of you who love dancing, no matter if you have done it before or not. We practice once a week, on Thursdays at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lilla auditoriet, ASA C (Väänrikinkatu 3C Look for ads about our beginners course (Swe. "Nybörjarkurs") which we arrange every year in September . You don't need a partner nor a folk costume to join us. The entire autumn is for free and we teach folk dance and ballroom dancing from scratch, but more experienced dancers will also be able to learn something new. You don't have to speak Swedish since dance is a universal language.
Musicians are welcome to join our folk music group 'Ostämt'.
In addition to our dance practice we arrange parties, excursions to dance places, sauna evenings etc. Moreover we go on trips and participate in courses both in Finland and abroad. Every year we participate in a dance festival somewhere in the swedish parts of Finland, and we also have other performances.
We are interested in getting in contact with some group of dancers or some festival to visit in the future. If you are interested in some collaboration with a student folk dance group from Finland do not hesitate to contact us.
Welcome to be a part of our merry gang!
