Intensive courses in the Swedish-speaking Åland
Islands. 70-80 hrs of Swedish at 3 levels. Small groups. The course
fee of 1,600 € covers tuition, materials, excursions and full board.

Why study Swedish in Finland
Swedish classes
Beginner’s level
Practical oral and written proficiency exercises including
role-play, vocabulary exercises, reading of simple texts,
repetition of basic grammar. Optional: additional conversation,
additional grammar. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge in English,
none or very little Swedish knowledge.
Intermediate level
The course is based on holistic learning and suggestopedia.
Focus is on text reading, practical language exercises, music,
role play and drama. Grammar repetition, written exercises,
vocabulary and pronunciation are also included. Optional:
additional grammar, additional conversation, Swedish and
Finland-Swedish literature. Prerequisite: Participants should be
able to express themselves in speech and writing about general
topics (the degree of correctness is less important); they
should master the basic grammar (e.g. choice of tense, word
order in main and subordinate clause).
Advanced level
Practical language training with emphasis on oral exercises
and conversation. Vocabulary training, reading of literary and
prose texts in general. Optional: additional grammar, additional
conversation, Swedish and Finland-Swedish literature.
Prerequisite: The participants should be able to express
themselves in speech and writing about general topics with a
reasonable degree of correctness.

Culture and Society
Besides the Swedish teaching proper, a Culture and Society
programme is given in the evenings in the form of lectures on
different topics. Lectures are given in Swedish.
Some of the evening themes are:
Swedish film: Get better acquainted with Swedish
film and decide which films are to be shown in the evenings
during the course.
Swedish-Finns: Learn about
Swedish-speakers in Finland and more about the subtle
differences between different forms of Swedish.
The Church of Finström: We will visit the lovely
church nearby and learn about its interesting history.
Children’s literature: Learn about Swedish
children’s literature and get many exciting tips on reading.
Folk music: During a short introduction to
Swedish-Finnish folk music you will also learn how to dance
schottis and even play the violin.
In Asgård: Follow us to
Asgård where the mythological gods lived during the prehistoric
age and you are situated right in the middle of it all.
Cursing in Swedish: Why, how and when do you curse in
Swedish? During the lecture you will learn how to swear and
curse credibly.
Swedish songs: You will get to know the Swedish song
tradition, the singers and composers. Maybe you know them and
can sing along, maybe you discover new favorites.
In addition to this, you will be able to experience
a crawfish-party - an important tradition amongs all Swedish
speakers - the Finnish sauna, take a sightseeing trip, go biking and so on.
Course Fees
Course with accommodation: 1,600 €.
The fee covers tuition, course materials, excursions and
extra-curricular activities, double-room accommodation and full
board. Transport is provided from the ferry terminal in
Mariehamn to Ålands folkhögskola on 25 July and
back to Mariehamn on 13 August.
Course without accommodation: 750 €.
The fee includes tuition, course materials, excursions and lunch Monday to Friday. If you prefer to arrange your own
accommodation, you are free to do so. Please note that the local
bus service is poor, so you will need a car or a bicycle in this
case.
No reduction is given for late arrival or
early departure. If, however, you are arriving or leaving early,
please indicate this clearly on the application form.
A non-refundable deposit of 50 € (which counts towards the
total fee) is to be paid as soon as you have received notice of
acceptance onto the course. The remainder is to be paid by
20 June 2006.
When budgeting for the course, please take into consideration
costs for renting a bike (20 €/week and a refundable deposite of
50€), entertainment, telephone,
any private trips and unforeseen expenses. Unfortunately, we
have no scholarships for participants.
All payments should be sent to our Finnish bank account in
Nordea Bank Finland, no. 166030-107667, accredited to Åbo

If you cannot pay by direct bank transfer or Post Giro, send
a bank cheque (adding 12 euro for processing charges) to the
same address. Please state the same codes and the name of the
participant on the cheque. N.B. Please save the receipt of
payment and bring it to the course.
Application and Requirement for admission
The maximum number of participants is 30. A good working
knowledge of English is required of beginners in Swedish.
Admission to this course does not imply admission for regular
term-time study at Åbo Akademi.

How to get to Åland?
Ålands Folkhögskola
Ålands Folkhögskola is situated near the idyllic village of
Pålsbölle, 25 km north of Mariehamn, the only town in Åland. We
offer accommodation in the well-equipped student residences from
Sunday afternoon 31 July. Bed linen and towels are provided. TV,
pay-phone, sauna and washing machines are available, as well as
facilities for making coffee and tea.
The course fee includes full board with breakfast, lunch,
dinner and evening tea. The school has a library with fiction
and non-fiction in Swedish. There are also opportunities for
outdoor activities, and swimming places are within easy reach by
bike. There is a shop and post office at a distance of 2 km.
Free transport to Mariehamn will be arranged on Tuesday 9
August. Please note that drugs are not allowed at the school.
Bicicle hire
Ålands
Folkhögskolan offers new, gearshift bicycles for participants to
hire out.
Price:
20€/week
A refundable
deposit of 50 €
is to be paid
to cover eventual
repares caused by accident. Theft insurance
is not included.
Payments and agreements for bicycle hire will be taken care off
separatly by Ålands Folhögskola. Please reserv cash for this
purpose. Preliminary bicycle reservations can be made on the
application form.
