Course Description

Åbo Akademi University is arranging a short-course in Advanced Printing Technology on March 4-7, 2014 at Åbo/Turku, Finland. In addition to university students, the course is designed for industry professionals who are engaged in paper making & printing and who wish to improve their understanding of Printing Technology, and for those wanting to familiarize themselves with novel applications of using printing as a fabrication method for new products.

The course spans four days and features internationally renowned specialists who cover in detail established printing technologies; offset, rotogravure, flexography and digital printing, and introduce novel technologies such as Landa Nanography and printed electronics on paper. In addition, new applications, for example 3D-printing and printing of non-paper materials will be presented. An overview of economics of print media and media trends is reviewed together with pre-press processing, image reproduction, and print quality assessment. Detailed lectures will be given on printing materials, inks, fountain solutions, and substrates as well as on runnability issues. Practical sessions explore examples of different printed materials and focus on the analysis of printing defects and ways to assess these problems. A visit to a print house is included.

Those not having previous knowledge on printing technology, or wanting to refresh the basics, are encouraged to attend the pre-course refresher lectures (Tuesday morning at 10-12), which will cover the principles of different printing processes.

The course is appropriate for advanced level MSc and doctorate students, and is part the doctoral level education offered by both PaPSaT - International Doctoral Programme in Bioproducts Technology and FPIRC - The Forest Products Industry Research College. For students wishing to obtain ECTS study credits, written examinations will be arranged after the course at times and places that will be decided during the course.
