Project mission: To pave the road for the world´s leading energy conversion technologies that can utilize a wide range of biomass fuels and fuel mixtures.

FUSEC (FUture fuels for Sustainable Energy Conversion) is a Tekes company group project (yritysryhmähanke) and a three year joint research project between seven international companies and four Finnish universities and one research centre operating in the area of biomass, black liquor and waste combustion. The research efforts include company-specific tasks and a major common research program – the FUSEC Core Program, which is a joint research program for all partners.

The company partners are Metso Power Oy, Andritz Oy, Foster Wheeler Energia Oy, UPM-Kymmene Oyj, Clyde Bergemann GmbH, International Paper Inc., and Top Analytica Oy. Top Analytica is the project co-ordinator.

The research core consists of Åbo Akademi University, Tampere University of Technology, Lappeenranta University of Technology, Aalto University, and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The scientific co-ordination is done by Åbo Akademi University.

 The long-term, more fundamental research within the Core Program is combined with academic theses works.

The FUSEC Core Program focuses on the following themes:  

  1. Deposit control
  2. Corrosion/material control
  3. Bed management
  4. Flue gas quality control (NOx, SO2, PM2.5, etc.)
  5. Furnace process prediction
  6. Recovery boiler control (incl. changing black liquor quality
