3. Research activities
My research activities have all been connected with materials science,
especially with electrical properties of semiconducting materials. The
affiliation with the Technical Research Centre of Finland, Semiconductor
Laboratory was reflected in the choice of research topics, requiring a
certain applications potential. The visionary time perspective of the
applications still gave the work a basic research nature. With my
appointment to professor in experimental physics at Åbo Akademi
University in 1994 most of the basic research activities were transferred
here.
My research activities can roughly be divided into the following topics:
1. Si-Ge heterojunctions, 1968-69
- crystal growth and materials characterization
2. Magnetic semiconductors (europium chalcogenides), 1972-81
- crystal growth and materials characterization
- electrical and magnetic measurements and models
3. Electroactive polymers, 1980-
* Piezoelectric polymers 1980- 1988
- materials preparation and characterization
- electromechanical transducers/sensors
* Conducting polymers 1980-
- intrinsically conducting polymers (ICP) and particle
filled composites
- materials synthesis and characterization of ICPs
- electrical characterization and modeling
- applications in electrical engineering (electromagnetic
interference, antistatics,etc.) and electronics (device
structures, packaging, etc.)
* Molecular electronics 1984 -
- organic (semi)conductor materials
- thin films (spincoated, Langmuir-Blodgett molecular
deposition)
- electrical and optical characterization and modeling
- (opto) electronic devices (transistors, light emitting
diodes, etc.)

and Tekniikan Edistämissäätiö (Technology Development
Fund, Finland).
* Stipend for senior research scientists, The Academy of Finland. Jan. 1
- June 30, 1991. Part of this period was spent as a visiting scientist
at University of Linköping, Sweden.
