Social capital and religion

This working groups accepts theoretical and empirical contributions to the discussion about the impact of religion for the creation and preservation of social capital. We also accept papers which thematize relations between on the one hand religion and on the other hand of social capital in line with the well known theories of Putnam, Coleman and Bourdieu. Theories about informal networks and smaller groups, institutions as churches and congregations which only can function if reciprocal trust exists to a necessary degree are relevant. Also papers that problematize the definitions of social capital and religion when they are related to each other are welcome.
There is reason to believe that religion often is central for the birth of social capital, but it is also reasonable to ask if social capital in a group may give birth to new religious expressions. Finally, social capital may bind religious networks and groups to the point of isolation from the “world” or function as a bridge between different religious and secular groups.
Socialt kapital och religion
Arbetsgruppen välkomnar teoretiska och empiriska bidrag till diskussionen om religionens betydelse för uppkomsten och bevarandet av socialt kapital. Under rubriken socialt kapital kan ingå uppsatser där man tematiserar relationerna mellan å ena sidan religion och å andra sidan socialt kapital främst i enlighet med Putnams, Colemans eller Bourdieus teorier. Teorier om informella nätverk och gruppbildningar samt institutioner såsom kyrkor och församlingar d.v.s. sociala sammanhang som endast kan fungera så länge medlemmarna har förtroende för varandra är relevanta. Också uppsatser som problematiserar definitionerna av socialt kapital och religion då de relateras till varandra är välkomna.
Religion kan på goda grunder antas vara en viktig faktor i skapandet av socialt kapital, men det är också sannolikt att särskilda religiösa uttryck kan uppstå i grupper som besitter socialt kapital. Vidare kan socialt kapital binda samman religiösa nätverk och grupper på ett sätt som isolerar dem från omvärlden eller alternativt fungera som en brygga till andra religiösa och sekulära grupper och sammanhang.
