Religion and mass media
Anders Sjöborg, Uppsala University
In late-modern society, mass media seem to play an increasingly important role,
also for religion. Historically dominated by North American studies, the research
field in the Nordic countries is becoming stronger. Part of this is related to the
international network on the intersection of media – religion – culture, which also
has a Nordic network. The field is also related to the international discourse on
religion and popular culture. The Nordic region provides an interesting case for
such studies given its cultural and religious heritage, high material standard of
living and significant sub cultural pluralism when it comes to youth culture.
This session therefore welcomes papers on religion and film, religion and popular music,
religion and news, religion and new media and other related topics.
