Studying AbroadOne of the advantages of studying abroad (as opposed to working), is that you will not only get credit for your language practice period, but also for the studies you do while being abroad. Before you apply to a univeristy, you should discuss your choice of courses with the Professor at our department and get a written agreement from him, stating which of the courses you plan to take will be accepted for your degree and how many study weeks you will be awarded for those courses here). If you wish to study abroad at an English-speaking university, you can do one of the following: 1. You can arrange everything yourself with any English speaking university of your choice. 2. You can go through the Department's own exchange program. 3. You can apply to one of the universities that Åbo Akademi has an exchange program with (through the Erasmus-exhange program). The Department's Undergraduate Exchange ProgramThe English Department at Åbo Akademi has a one-to-one exchange program with the English Department at Presbyterian College (PC) in Clinton, South-Carolina. Usually we send two to three students there every second spring, and they send a matching number of students here every other second year. Presently, we have three students from PC visiting us, so the next time we are going to send anybody (max. three [3] students) to the other side of the Atlantic will be either in the fall of 1999 or the spring 2000. Our three visitors will then act as hosts and hostess to our students going to PC next time. Check out the notice board for information concerning the application procedure.FinancingIf you go to Presbyterian College through the Departmental exchange program, you do not have to pay a tuition fee at PC, only Kåravgiften here in Turku as usual. The English Department at PC will arrange accomodation for you in one of the dormitories on campus. You can apply for a Donner grant to cover most of your living expenses (as well as the flight ticket to and from PC).The Erasmus Exchange ProgramÅbo Akademi has exchange programs with many English-speaking universities in both Great Britain and the United States. Some of them are specifically designated for students at the English Department at Åbo Akademi. Such universities include the University of East-Anglia |
