The Finnish Society for the Study of English

Welcome to the homepages of the Finnish Society for the Study of English.

FINSSE was founded at the Seventh Conference of the Nordic Association for English Studies (NAES) in Turku in May 1998 to advance university-level research and teaching in Finland of the English language, literatures in English and cultures of English-speaking peoples.

FINSSE will organize meetings, symposia and biennial English studies conferences in Finland, serving as a new forum for the English Departments' Conferences and other nationwide English studies events. It provides its members with electronic means for information exchange: a mailing list ( and a homepage with news and information about current events. In the future FINSSE may also serve as an organ of English-studies specialists in the Finnish society at large. Moreover, FINSSE will maintain contacts with other similar organizations in Europe and overseas.

Individual membership in FINSSE is open to any person working in the field of English studies in a university English department in Finland. Other researchers and teachers may be accepted as members at the discretion of the board.

All FINSSE members will automatically become members of the European Society for the Study of English (ESSE) and are thus entitled to receive The European English Messenger, published by the Society twice a year, and to participate in all ESSE activities, including its large-scale biennial conferences. FINSSE members are also members of the Nordic Association for English Studies. The membership fee, 25/15 €, covers FINSSE, NAES and ESSE memberships and is tax-deductible.
